Sparta, in the Mycenaean period, was one of the most influential poleis of ancient Greece, built in the center of Laconia in the Peloponnese around the 10th century BC. On its history it is often difficult to distinguish between reality and legend; in fact, he possessed such a peculiar culture that many historical sources were impressed by his myth and their testimonies in this regard are sometimes unreliable. This legendary aura was fueled by Sparta itself and its army which helped to hand down what historians call the "Spartan mirage". Near the ancient city stands today the Greek municipality of Sparta.
