She has a way of singing and delivering her poignant songs with a vulnerability that allows for the lyrics that cut like knives to be openly received by the listener. Its a true gift. It should be stated up front, I am a fan. Since the release of War Brides, passed along to me by a Haligonian in 2006, I have been smitten. Amelia Curran has come a long way since that release. I watched her accept a Juno in her hometown of St. John’s and felt completely proud and connected to that moment. Amelia accepted that award as a Newfoundlander, inclusively. To my mind, she is a Leonard Cohen or Joni Mitchell of our time. Lofty praise, but I stand behind it. Her fourth album “They Promised You Mercy” was released on October 6th, 2014 on six shooter records. She joined us in the studio this summer with her band and recorded 3 tracks. The band all appeared to have fun doing so. Curran’s humour, on and offstage is as bright as her lyrics. The band recorded, three great examples of Curran’s brightness, from the 2012 release, Spectators: The Modern Man, What Will You Be Building and Blackbird on Fire, The thing about her songs is that they state and ask, in a fine balance, provoking thought and creating permission to look deep, in part because of the first person viewpoint as exemplified in Blackbird on Fire.The lyrics, laden with the Curran metaphoric pen and songs with her recognizable chord structures, share social commentary, invoke personal questioning, and create an environment for the listener to soften.
