After spending some time in this process, talking to people with similar experiences, and the racial problems going on, I feel the need to make a rant on systematic racial profiling that happens in this industry. It's not a secret and it's not going away. It's disgusting and frustrating when I hear what other people have been through. So maybe some exposure will get companies to reflect. How many of you out there have dealt with something similar? I never knew the feeling of being rejecting by my own heritage, and this one hurt. Those companies really don't want a "Chinese" teacher. Also, I do understand that some companies look for specific accents that they want to implement in their classrooms. But with no clarification and explanation, it only leads to reasoning with racial profiling. Actually, one of my friends had a straight-up confrontation with racist recruiters so yeah, I'm not making this up. Side note: As an anthropology graduate who doesn't see race but rather ethnicity and cultural heritage... I've seen job postings where they state specifically they are open to people from any background, race, gender etc. And yeah, that's nice that they included that but WHY on earth have humans come to put such importance on race when it shouldn't be used to profile people and discriminate?? I just don't understand how messed up the world can be. Oh and my friends and I have joked that I should just their face to get a job and then when I start teaching be like HEY LOOK AT MY CHINESE FACE. lol sad reality. Whatever.
