@A Look into Penang Culture | Street art, Chinahouse, Jetty Clans, Supermarket
On our last leg of the trip in Malaysia, we took a cultural spin. At Chinahouse, you can enjoy everything from delicious cakes, peaceful crafts to bars and local musicians. We strolled through the streets of Penang on a treasure hunt to find all the famous street art. The artists' works reflect the culture of the people in Penang. Mostly focusing on family, children, and way of life. If you have more time, I would also recommend visiting the colour houses in Penang(Blue Mansion, Green Mansion etc.) They are historical passages to immerse in and gain a greater understanding of the culture during colonial times. Jetty clans in Penang have a history that dates back to the 1800s. Each settlement was owned by different families; Lee, Chew, Lim, Tan, Yeoh, Keoy. These floating villages lived on the waters and survived mainly through fishing. To this day, you can still see their descendants living in these houses. If you come early in the morning or during festivals, you can witness them preparing meals and practicing rituals near the temple. We enjoyed the breezy winds at dusk by the waters and it was the most peaceful time on the entire trip for me. For a more modern take on Penang life, we went to the GAMA supermarket and department store. There we saw the types of food people eat on a daily basis. From snacks to produce to meats, they mostly have locally grown fruits and vegetables. Compared in western supermarkets, they were pretty similar with the exception that... theirs was huge and you can buy clothes and basically anything else upstairs. I did have some interesting finds but unfortunately, our luggage capacity didn't allow us to purchase much. And that's all for Malaysia! Our next stop is....
