What if Ash woke up on Time is perhaps the best-known and most popular Pokémon what if though the question of why is perhaps just as if not more interesting. Through some analysis, I believe it boils down to a couple of key factors. First, it is a canon what-if and one posed almost immediately in the Pokémon anime through how much emphasis the first episode puts on Ash sleeping in and its impact on his journey. This I believe feeds into the second reason which is that due to changing the very foundations of Ash’s journey it can be used to justify massive changes from the get-go, while on the other hand not necessitating it, making it equally valid to stay very close to canon aside from the obvious tweaks of Ash’s starter, which even in and of itself is open to interpretation as to which one he gets. Finally, I believe this story concept appeals to people because of its connection to nostalgia not only because it is tied to the iconic Indigo League arc of the anime which for many fans is where they first got introduced to Ash, but also because for many this was their first experience with Pokémon what ifs and possibly what inspired them to start making their own in the first place.
