@Auburn Main Jail Pays Out $250K In Class Action Lawsuit In Brutal Beating Of Mentally Ill Prisoner
🗒PBM Police Incident Report: Security camera footage showing a mentally ill man being beaten by prison officers has been released after a California county settled a class action lawsuit. It appears to show Auburn Main Jail inmate Beau Bangert, who reportedly suffers from schizophrenia, getting tasered, punched and smacked the face with a plastic body shield as he is restrained by four officers inside his cell. In the video, Bangert is standing alone in a cell with his fists raised. A Placer County sheriff's deputy then forces him into a wall using a plastic body shield. Three other corrections officers rush in to restrain him. While he's restrained, Bangert is punched several times in the head and hit with a stun gun as the officers attempt to subdue him. About 90 seconds into the video, four additional officers come into the cell and Bangert is taken to the ground. Video release comes after a $1.4 million fund was set up to pay about 200 people who were part of a class-action lawsuit against Placer County alleging excessive force being used by corrections officers. Merin also represented the settlement class. Those people will get checks, ranging from $1,500 to $100,000, if they qualify through supportive medical records. Bangert got a separate civil settlement of $250,000. There's another payment of $50,000 coming to him as representative on the class-action lawsuit, said Merin, the civil rights attorney who brought the class-action lawsuit. Part of the settlement also includes change in jail policy and practices. Inmates who believe they're the victim of excessive force can file grievance forms, which will be audited by Merin and the court. Three Placer County law enforcement officers who were charged in May 2017 in connection with the incidents. All three were fired. Criminal charges were dropped against one, while the other two pleaded no contest to a charge of felony assault, according to court documents. *Disclaimer: This video content is intended for educational and informational purposes only.
