You used to be able to go into a bank and ask to see your money. A banker would take you into the vault and point at a stack of bills and say, “there’s your money right there, safe and sound, exactly what you pay us for every month. We’re doing our job” It’s a fair bit different in the modern age, isn’t it? Now, your money exists in a digital format, and if the computers say you’re money is there, then has to be there right? In technology we trust. We’re supposed to trust our banks, but how can we possibly do that when every bank relies on a system that they can’t even trust. Our money is now “safe and sound” and exists only within a few lines of code within their system; code that can be accessed from any remote location on earth. Back in the day, protecting your money meant more guards and bigger guns, but physical bank robberies are no longer necessary, as walking into a bank with weapon and demanding cash is obsolete. You can have the meanest, toughest guards packing heat at the bank and it’s not going to stop some hacker from Venezuela from anonymously hacking the system and making out like a bandit, without so much as yelling “everyone down” Takes all the fun out of a good heist movie. Money has been called the root of all evil for a reason. Wealth is similar to alcohol, it can bring out the best or, most commonly, the worst in us all. Money is simple when we’re young. Everyone remembers the thrill of their first paycheck; that few hundred bucks seemed like a fortune when we lived at home with our parents rent free, no bills and the world at our fingertips. That money burned a hole in our pockets, didn’t it, as we got our first taste of what it felt like to be free. To spend the fruits of our labors freely with no restraint. When we get older and move out on our own, things work a bit differently don’t they? The price of living steadily skyrockets, vehicles cost more than the down payment on house, and in this current climate, houses are just about impossible to purchase with a middle class income. Suddenly the same amount of money becomes less and less, and you find yourself living off money that doesn’t belong to you. Then you find yourself making payments on borrowed money, just to buy yourself a little more time so you can afford the odd luxury, because without it, you may just lose your momentum and slip into depression. Nothing breaks a soul like money, or the lack there of. The sweet spot seems to be right in the middle. The happiest people I know are those that make enough to live comfortably, but not too much as to be considered rich, or the middle-class as they have been called. A class of people that are slowly diminishing with every passing year. On the other hand you have the successful people out there, those that financially surpass middle-class. I’m not talking about the true privileged in this society. You know, the people that never had to taste desperation or worry about making their rent; the one’s that started the same way we did, but perhaps they made the right investments or worked a little harder, maybe even lucked out on their financial endeavors. It’s interesting to see what happens to people with money. Some handle it well, but for the majority they suddenly deem themselves smarter or even better than everyone else. They begin to respect the almighty dollar, and not much else. For some it turns into a greed race. This guy’s car is newer, so I have trade mine in, this neighbors house is bigger and more luxurious so we have to upgrade. The greed of the rich is evident in the high end fashion industry, where some people out there pay more money for a purse than most of pay for a used car. pride month politically impaired ===========================Copyright Disclaimer =========================== Copyright Disclaimer under section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, education and research.
