1.13.2021 - The Portland Youth Philharmonic Parent Association (PYPPA) invites you to this free info session with tips on how you can support your musician. With panelists: - Adam Eccleston (Program Director of BRAVO Youth Orchestras and private teacher) - Carin Miller Packwood (Principal Bassoon of the Oregon Symphony Orchestra and private teacher) - Jason Rodgers (Director of Bands and Choirs at Valor Middle School) - Hosted by PYP Musical Director David Hattner PANELISTS: ADAM ECCLESTON Originally from New York City, Mr. Eccleston moved to Germany with his family at the age of nine. As a soloist, he has appeared with several orchestras around the United States and Europe. He can be heard on Portland’s All Classical Radio Station 89.9fm. Orchestrally, Mr. Eccleston is former principal flutist of The Eastern Festival Symphony Orchestra and the Boston-based chamber orchestra, Discovery Ensemble. A devoted humanitarian and firm supporter of arts education, Mr. Eccleston has worked extensively with MESDA group, a non-profit organization that offers a wide variety of educational support through music to under developed countries around Central and South America and the Caribbean Islands. Currently, he is the Program Director for BRAVO Youth Orchestras. Mr. Eccleston has presented master classes at Portland State University and in Panama City, Panama. CARIN MILLER PACKWOOD Carin Miller Packwood is principal bassoon of the Oregon Symphony, and she previously held principal bassoon positions with the Jacksonville and Shreveport symphonies. She has performed regularly as guest principal bassoon with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, as well as the Portland Opera and Oregon Ballet Theater. She enjoys collaborating with local chamber groups such as Chamber Music Northwest, Amadeus Chamber Orchestra, Third Angle New Music Ensemble, 45th Parallel, and Classical up Close. Carin holds a BM from the Juilliard School, an MM from Rice University, and an Advanced Certificate from the University of Southern California. She is currently adjunct faculty at Portland State University and Reed College, serves on the Board of Directors for PYP, and is Founder and Director of Bassoons Without Borders. JASON RODGERS After earning his Bachelors and Master of Arts in Teaching at Lewis & Clark College in ‘98 and ‘99, Jason has dedicated his career to building the music program at Valor Middle School. From the beginning, he began creating supplementary materials for his band classes, which eventually culminated in a method book that he has used to teach beginning through advanced level classes since 2012. Jason is very proud to have coached six students to successful auditions with PYWE, and currently has three former students (now high schoolers) in PYWE and PYP. After participating with PYP for 12 years - runouts, conductor visits - Jason joined the PYP board in 2019. www.portlandyouthphil.org
