Post-Apostolic Church's video: Hippolytus of Rome

@Hippolytus of Rome
Hippolytus was an overseer in Rome around AD 225. He was a student of Irenaeus. Origen heard him preach. Against other overseers in Rome, Hippolytus opposed false doctrines, such as Monarchianism, which is the belief that there is one God in one Person instead of the three Persons of the Trinity. Unlike any other Pre-Nicene writer, we probably know what Hippolytus looked like because a statue was found in 1551 that was made with inscriptions about him on it. Of his works that have survived, they include: Refutation of All Heresies Treatise on Christ and the Antichrist Expository Treatise Against the Jews Against Plato on the Cause of the Universe Against the Heresy of Noetus Against Beron and Helix Discourse on the Holy Theophany and many, many fragments from his many commentaries including Genesis, Numbers, Kings, Psalms, Proverbs, Song of Songs, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel, Daniel, Matthew, and Luke. -- THE PYTHONISSA The meaning of this word by Jerome for one of Hippolytus' works is unknown. It appears that this work has been lost since Jerome's day. I have done as much research as humanly possible on the Pythonissa and came up with these probabilities (in order of likelihood): 1) As a proper noun from the Greek, the Pythonissa refers to "Pythian Apollo." 2) Tertullian used a closely related word and defined it as a "ventriloquist spirit." 3) In Latin, pythonissa means a "witch" or "sorceress" (probably of Apollo). 4) The base word, Python, is used by Luke in Acts 16:16 which is translated as a "divination" spirit." -- If you would like to subscribe to this channel via email, send your request to postapostolicchurch@gmail.com. Quotations from ancient writings might be paraphrased because many of them were translated in the 1800s. I have done my best to keep this to a bare minimum.
