The Aravali Green Wall Project, inaugurated by the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change on the International Day of Forests, is an ambitious initiative aimed at creating a 1,400km long and 5km wide green belt buffer around the Aravali Mountain range, spanning across states of Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Delhi. In its initial phase, the project intends to rejuvenate 75 water bodies, starting with five water bodies in each district of the Aravalli landscape, particularly targeting degraded land in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Bhiwani, Mahendergarh, and Rewari districts of Haryana. Inspired by Africa’s 'Great Green Wall' project, which began in 2007, India’s Green Wall seeks to combat rising rates of land degradation and the eastward expansion of the Thar desert. By afforesting along the Aravali hill range from Porbandar to Panipat, the project aims to restore degraded land, mitigate dust from western India and Pakistan, enhance biodiversity, and improve ecosystem services through carbon sequestration, wildlife habitat creation, and water quality enhancement.
