In your opinion, what is the most important thing about being a nanny? What activities would you do with the children? (age-appropriate) How would you handle behavioral and emotional problems that might arise with the children? How would you handle getting the children ready for school in the morning? (If you have to wake them, feed them, make sure they are totally prepared for the day.) If the children are sick, at what point would it be appropriate to call the doctor/911? Are you willing to do some housework? How much? Cooking/Cleaning/Laundry? Are you willing to attend any classes to develop your skills? Questions for you to Ask: Make sure you have similar philosophies on parenting! • What do the parents expect of you on a daily basis? Just childcare, or housework also? • Should you have your own transportation to/from the job, and during the day, or will they provide a vehicle for you? • What kind of discipline do they want you to use? Is this topic open for discussion? If a parent has completely different discipline style than you are comfortable with, share your style with them and hopefully you can reach a compromise. • If you are interviewing for a live-in position, ask where you would be staying (how can you have privacy when you are off the clock?) and what the hours are that you are expected to nanny. If it is a live-out position, find out the hours and the days of the week. • Also, ask about the children that you’ll be caring for: Ages, interests, favorite books/toys, and any medical information such as allergies. What does a typical day look like for the family? Ask what the rules are for telephone, internet, and t.v. time?
