Sasihithlu Bhagavathi Kshetra is one among renowned places of worship in South India, has a history of over 1,200 years. 'Sasihithlu,' as the name itself suggests is a place which is surrounded by Coconut Trees. The diety Goddess Shri Bhagavathi is known to fulfill the wishes of her devotees and bless them abundantly. While the temple and the goddess is being worshipped by people from all over the country, it is said that the goddess is the principal deity of people belonging to Thiya Community. As per the Sthala Purana, a demon king named Darakasura, was terrorizing the people and saints. Darakasura had observed several penances in the name of Lord Bhrama, which led God to grant him his wishes. Traumatized by his tyranny Lord Indra and other Gods prayed to Lord Narayana to put an end to Darakasura. It is at this time Saptadurgas/Sapta Bhagavathis (Seven Goddesses) emerged from eight directions of Lord Narayana and killed the demon king. After killing him the Seven Goddesses didn't go back to their original abode, instead, they traveled from Southside to Northside of Karavali (Coastal Karnataka) through the sea route. And wherever they went Punya Kshetras (Holy Temples) dedicated to these Bhagavathis were built. As the goddesses were traveling by the sea route they came near Sasihithlu, smitten by the natural beauty of this place which was filled with tender coconut trees and other trees, they decide to spend more time. It is at this juncture a man named Thondakanna or Thotadanna belonging to Thiya Community came across the place where the Goddesses were resting. As age-old tradition of providing refreshments to the guests, Thondakanna plucked tender coconuts, peeled it with his own hands and offered to one of the Goddesses who was eldest among all. The goddess accepted the tender coconut happily, however, her younger sisters didn’t accept as they considered that the tender coconut had been desecrated as Thondakanna had peeled it with his hands. As a result, the younger sisters said that since their older sister was desecrated she would have to stay back. The goddess accepted it happily and decided to stay back and asked her sisters to proceed. As Goddess Bhagavathi decided to stay back at Sasihithlu as per the request of Thiya Samaj’s Thondakanna, the goddess is most revered by the people belonging to Thiya Community. The other goddess went and settled at Bappanadu, Kateel, Mundkoor, Polali, and Kunjarugiri. As the name of Sasihithlu Bhagavathi temple finds a mention in the administrative records of Sawanth Kings who ruled the coastal region 1,000 years ago, reaffirms the fact that even this temple is 1,000 years old. The temple is also known for its architectural beauty and is an amalgamation of Kerala – Karnataka style architecture. The unique feature of this temple is that both its outside and the inner area is surrounded by sand. The Goddess Bhagavathi is seated in Padmasana position inside the sanctum sanctorum. Upon seeing the goddess’s peaceful face, people are filled with devotion. Daivas of Sasihithlu Bhagavathi As per mythology along with the Goddesses, Guliga who was the pivotal part of Lord Vishnu has become the Kshetrapalaka of the temple. The other daivas that are worshipped are Hiriya Baghavathi, Daivaraja, Ghantakarna and Dhoomavathi. Daily Pooja offered Unlike in other Bhagavathi temples were the daily pooja is offered at the Bhandara Mane, in Sasihithlu Bhagavathi temple pooja is offered in the temple twice daily. This system of offering pooja was started in the temple as per the request made by the devotees after the temple underwent Jeernodhara.
