While on one side we have high speed trains like the Rajdhani-s & Shatabdi-s running under electric traction, there's another side (less talked of) that still bears the signs of old days having gone through lesser developments and changes. It does not feature high speed trains but runs high on heritage. It does not feature modern electric locomotives but bears the heart of Indian Railways. Diesels locomotives rule here. There are semaphore signals, three aspect ones and even multiple instances of the old system of token exchanges. Expectedly, this side of Indian Railways is reduced to a cult status standing today with only a handful of people who truly appreciate these gems and old yet priceless methods of running trains. Sadly, change, as they say, is inevitable and is bearing down heavily on this side. So, before change gets a complete upper hand and washes away all these gems in the name of modernization and developments, I took out some time to visit and bear testimony to one such section of Indian Railways. Gujarat, in India's west, is a hot seat for such old gems of Indian Railways. Almost the entire state in still not under wires and features thick diesel actions. So here's presenting a journey from the Saurashtra region of Gujarat on board 22992 Veraval Mumbai Bandra Weekly Superfast Express. Features the run from Veraval, near Somnath, to Ahmedabad past Junagadh, Jetalsar, Rajkot, Wankaner, Surendranagar & Viramgam. We were led by a Vatva WDM-3A which gave us some tremendous smoking and chugging action all along the way. Watch out for numerous three-aspect semaphore signals all along the way post Rajkot and even a few instances of token exchanges before Junagadh. Features a few crossings: - 1. Rajkot Somnath Express 2. Ahmedabad Somnath Intercity 3. Secunderabad Rajkot Express with twin Kazipet WDM-3A I had undertaken this journey in the Second AC compartment but ended up spending most of the time in the adjacent GS coach.
