@Princess Diana Inquest- The Ambassador, the Spy, the Cop & the Liar - 16/2/08
Martyn Gregory, author of the acclaimed book on the death of Diana 'Diana: The Last Days', provided his weekly report on the goings on at the inquest on 16 February. That week began with Lord Michael Jay who was British Ambassador to France in 1997 and announced Diana's death to the world with the words "The death of the Princess of Wales fills everyone with much shock and much grief." More than ten years later, he had to come to take the witness stand at the Royal Courts of Justice to deny that he had personally ordered the embalming of Diana's body. A plainly nonsensical claim to make but the Coroner felt as the claim had been made it was only fair to give the former ambassador a chance to respond to it. Next up was Diana's Brother-in-Law and private Secretary to the Queen, Lord Robert Fellowes who provided an alibi in response to the allegation he was at the British Embassy in Paris. Again, an allegation that was blatantly false however the inquest provided the forum by which the claims could be tested. Richard Tomlinson was given the opportunity to back up his fantastical claims that a 'flash before the crash' *could* have been responsible for the death of Diana. He admitted under examination that there was nothing to substantiate this and that any such plan would have been very difficult to carry out. Lord John Stevens who headed the British police investigation into Mohammed Fayed's claims after his retirement as Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police. He was picked up on a trivial point by the Fayed funded lawyer for Henri Paul's parents and went on to deny he was the part of any cover up. As with the two other Lords who appeared that week, obvious points were put to them as a result of the multi-million pound media campaign to spread the conspiracy theories. Revealingly, one of the architects of that disinformation campaign, Mohammed Fayed's "Head of Security" John McNamara collapsed under cross examination and admitted much of what the Fayed organization had claimed was false. He admitted that he had lied on television that Henri Paul not had been drinking alcohol in the Ritz Hotel Bar. In truth, he knew perfectly well Paul had consumed two Ricards before taking the wheel having seen the bar receipt. Despite this, he went on TV and claimed Paul only had pineapple juice.
