We had missed visiting ‘our annual favourite’ altogether last year and this was our last chance in 2024. Leh starts shutting down around mid October every year as temperatures go sub-zero. We decided to fly this time instead of hitting the road as driving back would be a challenge if the passes got snowed out. So on another impulsive trip, here we are…in Leh!
Visiting Leh between End Sept-mid October?
Pro’s
1) Flights are super cheap, tickets for 2 cost us just 5k from Delhi to Leh.
2) Hotels offer heavy discounts towards end of season.
3) Almost no tourist crowd so you can peacefully visit the monuments.
4) Leh market is way less crowded and you get good bargains, ideal to stock up on dry fruits, winter wear and local artefacts.
5) There are many centrally heated hotels which keep you comfortable even in extreme cold.
Cons
1) Temperatures range between 12 and 0 degrees Celsius which is pretty cold weather.
2) Due to the high altitude and low oxygen levels, it usually takes 1-2 days to acclimatise and a little longer in extreme temperatures.
3) Temperature dips to zero degrees and sub zero, forcing you to stay indoors after sundown.
