@Gedonia playthrough Part 01 That humble open world RPG everyone talks about
The game market in the last few years has become oversaturated – there are simply too many platforms and too many titles to choose from and even if you want to look for a new game to check out, you must browse through hundreds of seemingly similar propositions, especially in the case of specific genres such as open world survival, deck-building, soulslike, etc. Some time ago I have come across a YT channel - Splattercatgaming (being a complete noname, it's always weird to pay credit to a well-known Youtuber :P) - where the author of the videos presents dozens of indie games in a very thorough and substantive manner. This is how I learned about Gedonia. Gedonia is a solo project - this game is mostly developed by one person! And although that is not something very unusual, there are many titles that fit into this description, Gedonia is massive in scope - it takes the open world premise of RPG games and adds a lot of MMORPG flavors to it. It is only just my assumption, but I would guess that the creator (Oleg Kazakov) used to play a lot of early MMORPGs and browser-based RPGs back in the day but with a twist: he treated those games as singleplayer adventures. Hence he eventually decided to create his dream game, something that will fill the niche for other people who just enjoy playing solo in massive worlds with great amount of content and many opportunities for progression. Again, that is only my assumption. And yet the initial feel of the game, the graphics, icons, mechanics, skill trees, remind me of all those titles that I invested waaay to many hours in when I was younger. Before buying the game, I tried to find longer gameplays to see maybe some endgame stuff or more challenging areas. Unfortunately, most of the videos show only the first 2 or 3 hours of gameplay. That is why I decided to make my own playthrough of the game, provided that I liked it. And boy I really do! I don't mind the graphics, they are fine. The sluggish animations that you see in the gameplays do not feel that sluggish when you actually play the game. When you get used to the style and controls, Gedonia throws you into its massive map filled with exploration and opportunities and I guess the simplistic main story is just an excuse to push the player forward to new locations. You can tell that the main and obvious element of the game is exploration - just at the beginning, I thought that a mountain looked "climbable" although it obviously was the edge of the map. However, I decided to climb it, Todd Howard style, and I found a treasure chest! That and many other small details made me like this game immediately and I already know I will play it through. The developer obviously created a game that he himself would like to play - a golden rule in game development.
