This series covers everything from basic gear to glass blowing techniques, and in Episode 12, Purr owner Chad will show you how you can elevate your glass one hitter with a metal fuming technique. All of our glass is American made and handcrafted out of Chatsworth, Los Angeles, California. A one hitter is an awesome piece for travel and ease of use, and it can look as good as it hits! Fuming is a technique invented by Bob Snodgrass where metal is vaporized into raw glass. This creates beautiful color shifting patterns in your work that gets bolder as you smoke out of it. Purr owner Chad will show you how you can take a section of glass tubing and use a fuming technique with silver to craft a design in your one hitter. For the fuming on these pieces, we use a silver coin and create small chunks that we can attach to the end of a punty. With your tubing prepped, heat the center of the tube so you can pull it into a narrow blowpipe. With a reamed open end and a plugged blowpipe, you can begin fuming the glass with your silver by letting the torch vaporize and place the fume into the glass. We also chose to dot up the inside, and fume those to give the piece more depth. When your fuming is done, seal off the open end and punty it up so that you can pull the piece into its final form. Detach the punty and thin out the section where the bowl will be, and simply pop it open and clean up the opening. Repeat this with your mouthpiece and use a reduction flame to bring out all the fuming in your new one hitter! Don't forget to put it in the kiln so that your piece anneals.
