Pushkin House's video: Anna Maslenova on Marian Fell - the almost-forgotten translator of Chekhov

In collaboration with the Anglo-Russian Research Network, Pushkin House presents a lecture and Q&A from Anna Maslenova, Exeter University PhD student, on the much-maligned and almost-forgotten early translator of Chekhov and Koroleno, Marian Fell. Fell, an American of the early 20th century, travelled extensively through Russia and the Kirghiz steppes as a young girl, which may have influenced her more "domesticised" translations of Chekhov's work - which enraged the Russian critics and led to a strident article against her by Kornei Chukovsky. But did her more Anglophone tone really detract from the books, or were the priorities of her readers simply different from those of Russian critics?
