Pushkin House's music curator Alexander Karpeyev and cellist Ariana Kashefi play Alexander Varlamov's 'Appearance'. Alexander Egorovich Varlamov (1801-1848) was one of the founding fathers of the Russian art song, as well as composing ballets, incidental music and piano music. This ballade was originally a song, but was arranged for cello by Norbert Salter, a contemporary of Mahler.
