QE Adventures's video: Glacier Camping in Alaska NOLS Naval Academy 2018 part 2

@Glacier Camping in Alaska | NOLS Naval Academy 2018 (part 2)
Living on a Glacier in Alaska NOLS Naval Academy 2018 Part 2 of 3 Alaska mountaineering - Naval Academy style - means logging lots of miles while carrying heavy packs and navigating through boot-soaking streams, feet-grabbing mud fields, and snow-covered glaciers so bright they'll burn your eyes blind. In other words: It's amazing and unforgettable. In June 2018 Quinn Schneider traveled into the Alaskan backcountry with 11 other US Naval Academy Midshipmen and 3 instructors from NOLS, the National Outdoor Leadership School. This is their story. NOLS sets up eco-friendly, high-challenge adventures around the globe. Any eco-adventure-minded individual can take the NOLS Alaska Mountaineering course. But of course USNA arranges for its midshipman participants to get an extra twist of challenge. Check out the crew's 22-day journey in Alaska's Chugach Mountains, where they covered 100+ miles by foot, relied on a private pilot to find them as he flew in rations every few days, and experienced weather and terrain extremes. The expedition crew traversed from the Tar Glacier to the Nelchina Glacier where they encountered alpine tundra and dangerously steep scree passes that required multiple fixed lines to descend, deep snowfields, dry glacier camping and bushwhacking through Alaskan growth. The NOLS / USNA curriculum focused on expedition behavior, outdoor skills, communication, decision-making, feedback, risk management, and leadership training, including self and peer leadership on the trail and in camp, and designated leadership opportunities where each member was responsible for planning and leading several days on the expedition. Highlights of this course include descending a steep pass to the Nelchina Glacier, peak climbing, back country pizza cooking, ice climbing, crevasse rescue, building a quinzee snow shelter, and learning snow descent techniques. The NOLS / USNA Alaska Mountaineering trip is broken into three short videos for easy viewing. Hope you'll check out them all!
