Oligotrophic lake is understood to be that body of water with low primary productivity, resulting from a low content of nutrients in water. These lakes have low production of photosynthetic algae and other aquatic plants, and consequently, have very clear, high quality and well oxygenated waters. Ecologists use the term “oligotrophic” to distinguish unproductive lakes, characterized by nutrient deficiencies, from productive, eutrophic lakes, with extensive or excessive nutrient supplementation. Oligotrophic lakes are more common in cold regions, with beds of resistant igneous rocks (especially granitic). The Cardenillo (Verdigris) lagoon, located at the northern end of Cajas National Park, at the foot of the Filo de las Cajas at an altitude of 4145 meters above sea level enjoys these oligotrophic characteristics, which is why its striking color varies from blue-turquoise to greenish-clear .
