To practice maintaining balance and a stable body position when jumping Former All Black hooker, Crusaders assistant coach and current Hurricanes head coach, Mark Hammett, take you inside with the Crusaders to demonstrate a key aspect of lineout jumping. The drill teaches jumpers to maintain a good body shape during the jump sequence by pointing toes towards the ground when in the air. This locks body into a stable position making it much easier for lifters to hold the player in place and compete for the ball. This key skill is reinforced consistently in the Canterbury and Crusader environment and can be taught to players of all levels. Level: High School & Above Categories: Lineouts Coaching Points: 00:0:33.000 - The lifters must use good lifting technique 00:0:34.000 - The jumper must point his toes and tense his body to remain rigid as if he had a rod going vertically through his body from top to bottom 00:0:59.000 - Ensure the jumper does not bottom out and put all the pressure on the back lifter Common Faults: . Jumpers feet move forward after jump . Jumper not remaining rigid during jump . Jumper jumping forward onto front lifter Progressions: . Introduce competing pod and ball Instructions: . 2 lifters and a jumper operate as a jumping pod. . In their own time the jumper jumps into the air with the support of the lifters. . As a coach Mark has experienced great success with the Crusaders and was appointed head coach of the Hurricanes in 2011.
