Develop optimal angle of scrum engagement for maximum drive and stability on impact. Former All Black and Crusaders prop and current Crusaders forwards coach, Dave Hewett goes to work on an excellent scrummaging drill. Creating the correct angle for engagement is critical to powerful scrummaging. The ability to driving straight through and not upwards will maximise power and scrum performance. Level: High School & Above Categories: Scrums Coaching Points: 00:0:29.000 - Body weight is on balls of feet and in player is in a ‘Ducks arse’ position Head is in a neutral position 00:0:32.000 - Get player into position with a flat back and not an upward angle Player is to pivot on the bottom rib Common Faults: . Only moving one part of the body- either dropping the chest the whole amount or lifting the hips whole distance Instructions: . Player gets into scrummaging position. . Get player to pivot on ‘broom handle’ (the rib). . Lower the chest by half the amount and lift hips by half the distance. Contributors: . A product of the winning Crusaders environment Dave’s technical scrum ability and communication style has seen him rise rapidly through the ranks taking up a role as Crusaders Assistant Coach in 2010.
