RICHARD G MITCHELL's video: THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL Helen and Huntingdon

@THE TENANT OF WILDFELL HALL "Helen and Huntingdon"
Richard G Mitchell's score for the BBC TV mini-series score starring Tara Fitzgerald, Toby Stephens and Rupert Graves, was based on the book by Anne Brontë. The original novel shocked Victorian England and the cruel husband from who Helen Huntingdon escaped, was based on Anne Bronte's brother. In the novel, Helen leaving her husband violated not only social conventions, but the fundamentals of English law. Richard worked on the various requirements for music needed to shoot on set before a frame of film was shot (music that was needed for example in the ball scenes) and so having read the script, he decided to write a simple version of the film's main theme in order to incorporate it in this scene where Helen is teaching Hunting to play the piano. Richard gave Tara and Rupert the parts which they managed to learn in anticipation of shooting the scene and indeed what they played and recorded whilst filming the scene on set was used in the final film mix. This was the first of a long series of collaborations between the composer and director Mike Barker.
