@Remembering David Corcoran - Nyack, NY 10-13-2019
On October 13, 2019, family and friends of David Corcoran gathered at the Nyack Center in Nyack, NY to remember David Corcoran. This recording shares the recollections, poems and music that together helped paint a unique picture of this extraordinary man. The remembrance began with a string quartet playing "Selections for String Quartet" by W.A. Mozart and Joseph Haydn. Helen Bernard, friend and fellow poet then read Emily Dickenson's poem "Because I Could Not Stop for Death." J.S. Bach's "Aria from Goldberg Variations," recorded by Beatrice Rana, was played as slides from David's life were presented. This was the first of four musical selections picked out by David. John Corcoran, David's Brother, provided a beautiful introduction and remarks, and then shared the poem "Here" written by David. Following that, David's children, Thomas, Daniel and Kat shared their memories and thoughts. David's second musical choice, "A Foggy Day in London Town," performed by Fred Astaire was then played. William Diebold, David's brother, shared his recollections and read the poem "To Ruth" written by David. Alice Olick, mother-in-law and colleague at The Record, was the next to recount her thoughts of David. Benjamin Carey, a colleague at the New York Times, had an opportunity to present his memories. Chuck Strum, another of David's colleagues from the New York Times, was unable to attend in person, but was here for all to see and hear via recorded video. Following that, "Anything Goes" by Cole Porter was played as David's third selection. Bonnie Stetson, David's wife, was the next speaker. She shared her recollections and thoughts of their life together. Finally, Rupert Holmes, David's friend from high school, accomplished musician, playwright and writer, gave a unique perspective that brought an eloquent and personal close to a beautiful celebration of David Corcoran's memory and life. As guests gathered in the room for light refreshments, David's final musical selection J.S. Bach's "Fugue 17 in A Flat from Well Tempered Clavier" (recording from Sir Andras Schiiff) played in the background. Even if you never met David before entering the room, by the time you left, you had a wonderful sense and picture of this extraordinary man. Father, Husband, Son, Friend, Colleague and so much more.
