Arrival at Sendai Miyagi Prefecture, Tohoku Region 26 September 2011 President Benigno S. Aquino III arrived at the Sendai Shinkansen Station to start his full day trip to Tohoku Region, particularly in Ishinomaki and the coastal area of Kadonowaki, to check on the status of Filipinos severely affected by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami or the Great East Japan Earthquake. The President boarded the Hayate 17 train from Tokyo and travelled for less than two hours to Sendai. He was welcomed here by Sendai Mayor Emiko Okuyama and Station Master Hideaki Watanabe. Sendai is the capital city of Miyagi Prefecture and the largest city in the Tōhoku Region. A 9.0-magnitude undersea earthquake on March 11, 2011 hit Sendai and triggered an extremely destructive tsunami that caused nuclear accidents and affected hundreds of thousands of residents. ***
