Richard Strauss and the Power of Music Strauss Capriccio, Op.85, for string sextet Strauss Metamorphosen, realisation for string septet by Rudolf Leopold Violins, Caroline Pether, Simmy Singh Violas, Lowri Thomas, Kim Becker Cellos, Steph Tress, Deni Teo Double Bass, Elen Roberts This programme, by Sinfonia Cymru’s young artists, is an opportunity to hear two very different chamber works by Richard Strauss. The first, Capriccio, is a string sextet which features at the beginning of his opera by the same name. The second, the iconic Metamorphosen, is played here in its less well-known string septet realisation. Capriccio looks back to Strauss’ early compositional style, with writing that reflects his post-Wagnerian, late romantic works of the late 1800s. Metamorphosen, on the other hand, is a more complex, darker piece that was written at a time when Strauss was mourning the destruction of Germany, and particularly its major opera houses, during the Second World War. Metamorphosen contains music of great sadness alongside expressions of beauty and hope – a piece that could be considered the perfect metaphor for our current Covid situation.
