IN THE KITCHEN Hi you guys! So here’s the recipe followed by a list of the Swahili words I learned with the help of my Mom. Happy cooking! Believe me they are worth the effort! Yum! DONUTS! 1 Cup Milk ¼ Cup Sugar ¾ Teaspoon Salt ½ Teaspoon Nutmeg 1 Package Active Dry or Cake Yeast 2 Tablespoons Lukewarm Water 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil 1 Egg 3 1/2 Cups Sifted All-Purpose Flour Sifted Confectioners’ Sugar Scald milk, add granulated sugar, salt and nutmeg. Cool to lukewarm. Sprinkle or crumble yeast into warm water (use lukewarm water for cake yeast), stirring until yeast is dissolved. To lukewarm milk mixture add oil, egg, dissolved yeast, blended with spoon. Add flour gradually, beating well. Cover with wax paper, then clean towel, and let rise in warm place until double in size. Turn dough (it will be soft) on to well-floured surface; knead gently. Roll into rectangles (or any shape you desire) . Cover with clean towel and let rise. Fry a few donuts at a time in deep oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar. (You can also put them in a paper bag with sugar and shake to get the well covered). Serve while hot.
