Two years after Aidan O’Brien had won his first July Cup with Stravinsky, he repeated the trick with another three-year-old named after a composer, who had begun the season over longer trips. He was second in the Irish 2,000 Guineas before winning the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot but the drop back to six furlongs here asked a whole new question. Sent off the 4/1 favourite under Michael Kinane in a field of 18, he produced a high-class performance. Soon at the head of affairs, he quickly left a clutch of very smart performers in his wake when asked to quicken approaching the final two furlongs and powered away to win by three and a half lengths.
