Sabah Seafood Night Market - Parrot Fish
During my recent visit to Sabah - a place that is blessed with nature’s beauty, I had the opportunity to visit a few places and taste delicious foods. One of the place that was in my must go list was the Waterfront Seafood Night Market located at Kota Kinabalu.
Waterfront Seafood Night Market lives up to its reputation as a seafood haven – take your pick from tiger prawns bigger than your palm, superb variety of fishes, fresh leafy green vegetables, giant lobsters and more. All the seafood is freshly caught and the entire market and stalls can be seen buzzing with action. My aim was to try the Parrot Fish which I think is difficult to find it in KL.
The parrot fish is a colorful and odd looking fish. It has tightly formed teeth, making them resemble a beak so that they can pick break apart and ingest coral, taking in algae and dead coral.
After a few minutes of walking around and survey, I managed to get this beautiful fish with a price tag of RM38 including 2 types of cooking method. I choose to try the fish cooked using the classic method - Ikan Bakar & Goreng with 3 Rasa sauce. Definitely it was worth it, this cooking method was the best way to bring out the unique taste that this Parrot Fish have.
The Parrot Fish has a light flaky fish texture, with not too many bones. The flavor was very mild with a touch of milky and buttery taste. I guess that’s the ideal fish flavor which will go along with any kind of sauce and it did.
It’s definitely an experience that worth to be treasured in memories and visual form.
P.S. It’s not advisable to eat the Parrot Fish due to the important role that the fish have in coral reef ecosystems by removing the algae that compete with corals and helps maintain the balance in the ecosystem.
