The Sloth Bear, is Sri Lanka's only species of bear. They look quite different to other bear species, they look more like an "old man of the forest". They have a long black shaggy coat. Their main tools and weapons are their long claws which they use to dig termite mounds where they gorge on these insects, but also use the claws to deadly effect as a weapon. They also love to forage for honey as all bears do. During the month of May and June the Palu Berries become ripe. The bears gorge themselves on these sweet berries and often become intoxicated as the sweet berries ferment in their stomachs. Often paying no heed to the vehicles or visitors to the National Parks, they go about their day walking along the roads and doing what bears do.
