Prophet Abraham holds a significant place in Islamic history and is considered one of the greatest prophets. The story of Prophet Abraham is closely associated with the observance of Eid-ul-Adha, also known as the Festival of Sacrifice.
According to Islamic tradition, Prophet Abraham was a righteous and devout servant of God who lived thousands of years ago. He was chosen by Allah as a prophet and was blessed with great wisdom and guidance. He preached the worship of the One God.
One night, Prophet Abraham had a vivid dream in which he saw himself sacrificing his beloved son, Ismail (Ishmael). This dream was a divine revelation from Allah, testing Abraham's devotion and obedience. The dreams of the prophets are considered a form of communication from God in Islam.
Prophet Abraham, being a devoted servant, recognized the significance of this dream and understood that it was a command from Allah.
However, he loved his son dearly and was faced with a difficult test. Despite his attachment, he submitted to the will of God without hesitation.
Prophet Abraham openly shared his dream with his son, Ismail. To his surprise, Ismail, being a righteous and obedient young man, accepted the command of God willingly and encouraged his father to fulfill the divine directive.
This exemplary father-son relationship demonstrated their unwavering faith in Allah and their complete submission to His will.
Together, Prophet Abraham and Ismail journeyed to Mount Arafat in Makkah (Mecca) to fulfill the command of Allah. As they reached the appointed place, Prophet Abraham prepared to sacrifice his son, Ismail, with a heavy heart but unwavering determination to obey Allah's command.
As Prophet Abraham raised the knife to fulfill the sacrifice, Allah, in His infinite mercy, replaced Ismail with a ram( goat like animal ) from Paradise.
This divine intervention demonstrated that their faith and obedience had been accepted, and Allah provided a substitute for the sacrifice. The ram ( known as dumba in urdu) was sacrificed instead, and its meat was distributed among the poor and needy.
This event marked the ultimate test of faith and obedience for Prophet Abraham and serves as a profound lesson for believers. Eid-ul-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, commemorates this story of devotion and obedience to Allah's command.
Muslims around the world celebrate this occasion by offering animal sacrifices, usually a goat, sheep, cow, or camel, symbolizing their willingness to submit to Allah and their gratitude for His blessings.
Eid-ul-Adha is a time of joy, reflection, and charity. It brings families and communities together to celebrate the spirit of sacrifice and strengthen their bond with Allah. Muslims engage in prayers, perform acts of charity, visit friends and family, and share meals together during this festive occasion.
The story of Prophet Abraham teaches the important values of faith, submission, and trust in Allah's wisdom and guidance.
It serves as a reminder that true obedience to God's commands and unwavering faith are rewarded, and Allah's mercy and provision are abundant.
