Most of us are familiar with a type of canon called a round, where the voices start again at the beginning when they finish. “Row, Row, Row Your Boat” and “Hinei Ma Tov” are examples of rounds. It is not so easy making a melody that will fit with a staggered version of itself as the harmony, so the creation of a round is almost like solving a puzzle. Schoen- berg often composed canons as a mental exercise, and he especially liked presenting them as gifts in honor of a friend or colleague’s birthday. Because tomorrow, May 26, is the 80th birthday of Joey’s grandfather Ronald Schoenberg, we decided that it would be fun to hear some of these rare, and often humorous, birthday canons on this concert.
