Mahalaya is the day on which Devi-Paksha begins and Pitri Paksha ends. This day is mainly celebrated in the East of India in the states like West Bengal, Jharkhand and Bihar. Mahalaya is marked seven days before the Durga Puja. It is believed that on this day goddess Durga had descended to Earth. Bengali people wake up early on this day and recite hymns from the Devi Mahatmya scripture. Offerings are made to the ancestors and at puja mandaps too. People make kheer, lapsi, rice, dal, spring beans vegetable and a yellow gourd on this day. Jago Tumi Jago is one of the most common hymns. This day marks the start of the Durga puja which continues for the next 10 days. This day is a reminder of celebrating truth and courage over evil.
