So far is hasn't got a release set in stone release date but nevertheless a limited time demo has dropped for the game on PS5 and Xbox Series S/X. It will be up for another 5 days as of the record of this vid. Basic features of the demo are access to the Wo Long character creator, one level of the game and a boss fight. So long story short did I like Wo long. The short answer is yes. Soon as you boot up the demo you head straight into the character creator where you can alter your appearance and starting class. The character creator is fairly respectable but nothing mind shattering. The classes are interesting but like any souls game they are not something you'll have to be married to forever as you can swap out options later. Taking my first look at the game I immediately realized one thing. This is not a pretty game. The graphics look good and the character models look nice. The enemies look intimidating and fearsome but they lack the visual distinctiveness of the souls titles or even nioh. The valley you are working your way through is just corridors of brown with now color to brighten things up. Elden RIng is probably a worse game to look at in terms of visual fidelity compared to Wo Long but what Elden ring has going for it is its balls to wall art style and distinct character and enemy design. What I saw of Wo Long was just very bleh. That combined with lackluster level design left me unimpressed with the demos presentation. So why do I like Wo Long then? I like it because the combat is just that good. As you work through this series of ravines and cliff paths you have to fight your way through waves of undead, enemy soldiers and some sort of corrupted looking monsters. I came into the demo with a Elden Ring Dark Souls playstyle mentality. I promptly got my ass kicked. Wo Long will kick your ass if you treat it like Dark Souls. You have to be aggressive and you have to mind your surroundings cause even just two enemies can gank you pretty hard. As you make your way through the ravine you'll unlock check points and find other points of interest where you plant flags. Doing so will give you a permanent boost to a stat called fortitude. This ties into something called the morale system. Your morale level gives you an edge in combat by essentially making enemies weaker or stronger. If an enemy has a higher morale level than you they will be tougher, if you have a higher morale level than your enemy then they will be easier to defeat. If you get hit by an enemies strong attack your morale will be lowered mid combat and if you die you will be sent back to the last checkpoint and your morale will instantly plummet down to whatever you current fortitude level is. Its possible to raise your morale level just by defeating enemies but that has a lot of risk so the best thing to do was to fully explore the level to find all possible flag planting locations to boost your maximum fortitude. The first night I played Wo Long I was speeding through it abit and got to a point where I was getting wrecked because I had missed several flag plantings. Next day I went back and found all the spots I missed and suddenly things got easier. This is an interesting system because It makes the player engage with the level even if the level is boring design wise. Once i got to the final boss of the demo I had maxed out fortitude so death meant nothing anymore in terms of affecting my stats and enemies who were kicking my butt early on I was now killing with ease. In terms of what you can actually do in combat there is a lot. I'm sure a ton of these spells were only available this early on for the demo and as a result there are alot of possible combinations. I didn't really mess around with the spells much or the stat boosting spirits with their uber attack until I got to the final boss. I was able to just brute force my way with just the combat until the final boss but once I engaged oh boy did I realize I needed to learn and fast. Phase 1 was fairly easy, I beat him on the first try easy, but phase 2 he went all Team Ninja Nioh sicko mode and kicked my ass again and again and again. At this point I started swapping out spell combinations, trying out different weapons and armor set ups looking for a way to win. I finally got him through a combination of poison status effects, life stealing on hit skills and learning how to deflect his super moves. Oh that's a big thing in Wo Long; learning Sekiro style deflections and parring. The deflection window for a lot of enemies is super tight so be prepared to practice.
