When I saw Ishin come up during the Sony state of play yesterday I nearly lost my shit. I'll be a man and admit that I haven't beaten every yakuza game but I am one hundred percent a fan of the franchise and love playing the games. Ishin originally came out back in the day for the PS3 but never came to the west. I and many other folks didn't even know the game existed till much later on. I personally didn't get into the franchise until Kiwami came out. Thanks to the newfound popularity the two Yakuza Kiwami remakes and Zero provided, the series has taken off to ridiculous heights in the last several years. Following Yakuza 6 and the end of kiryus saga the series transition to a new format with a new protagonist a la Yakuza: Like A Dragon but many die hard fan still remember the two spin offs that never came to the west. Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan was the first in the series on the PS3; taking place in the 1600’s and its follow up Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin takes place in the mid 1800’s at the beginning of the meiji era. If you take a moment you might notice something. Both games have the studio's name in them. Ryu ga Gotoku. I never noticed this till now and I hate to say it but I only just figured out what the studio's name translates to. These games are literally called Like A Dragon Arrives and Like A Dragon Restoration. Meaning the most recent game in the Yakuza series wasn't just named randomly. Its called Yakuza like A Dragon because thats the name of the damn studio and a callback to these two games. God dammit I feel like a fake fan. Well linguistics aside, Ryu ga Gotoku Ishin has officially been announced for the west. Coming next february 2023 as Like A Dragon: Ishin has been rebuilt from the ground up or so Sony claimed in the show. I don't know if this is a full remake like Kiwami 1&2 or just a really nice remaster like 3-5 but either way the game looks wild already. I mean we got blood, gore, tigers, majima. What more could you ask for. Ryu ga Gotoku wasn't content to let the dust settle though. Oh no. Almost immediately at the Ryu ga Gotoku summit event they announced TWO MORE GAMES. Like A Dragon 8 is confirmed. Not Yakuza 8 but Like A Dragon 8. My guess is that Ryu ga Gotoku has decided to drop the Yakuza moniker in favor of the Like A Dragon heading in order to give themselves more freedom of range going forward. But if you are afraid of them dropping the Yakuza name is a sign of massive change don't worry cause our boy Kiryu is back. Both Kiryu from Yakuza 0-6 and Ichiban star of Yakuza: Like A Dragon will be teaming up as dual protagonists for the game. Each will have their own party and who knows what the hell we are in for. Ichibans Like A Dragon was not afraid to get weird and now Kiryu shows up looking like some sort of J-pop bad boy. So far all we have in terms of a time frame is a 2024 window. But god look at Kiryu. I wonder what the hell happened to him after the end of Yakuza 6 to make him go from super dad to J-pop star. Oh wait i dont have to wonder. Werent yall listening; there are TWO games coming out besides Ishin. Ryu ga Gotoku also announced Like A Dragon: The Man Who Erased His name. Erased will be a shorter gamer about half the length of a usual Yakuza, which trust me is still plenty of content, and will focus on Kiryu how his life changes from the events at the end of Yakuza 6 to eventually leading into Like A Dragon 8. Erased will becoming some time in 2023. So quick round up. We got a remaster/remake for Ishin coming early 2023, Erased coming some time after that and then Like A Dragon 8 hitting us in 2024. I am telling you the fellas at Ryu ga Gotoku are cracked but in a good way, in a ill have whats hes having kind of way. Because we are ever glutinous babies though I do need to point out a few things id love for Ryu ga Gotoku to give us at some point. I'd love to see Ryu ga Gotoku Kenzan aka Like A Dragon: Kenzan to come west at some point and I'd love to see a remaster of Yakuza: Dead Souls. Dead souls was a non canonical spinn off that came out on the ps3. Rather than be a brawler RPG like the rest of the series it was a 3rd person shooter based around the main yakuza cast surviving and putting down an apocalypse level zombie outbreak. I mean come on that's just too good to pass up. Ryu ga Gotoku is cracked, that is fact. I'm buying what they are selling and you should too. Be it Yakuza, Judgment or Like A Dragon buy buy buy. This is a series worth supporting and a developer who just doesn't miss.
