@592 : The Dress Code - Breaking With Tradition (full version)
Weeks after President David Granger publicly states his position on the dress code as backward and archaic and just days after a similar proclamation by the First Lady, what if I told you Guyana still has a dress code enforced at most public institutions? For years, the citizens of Guyana have voiced their opposition to dress codes which discriminate against such things as sleeveless tops, shorts and slippers. Over the years many have been denied service on these grounds and in one notable incident two children were run over by a woman in her car as she sped away angrily from a school, having been denied entry because of her clothing. Is a dress code necessary in the 21st century? Will Guyanese suddenly attempt to gain entry to public facilities in the nude if the dress codes were to be abolished? Can you tell someone is respectable or not if they are wearing shorts or a sleeveless top? How do healthcare professionals feel knowing the dress code at places like the Cheddi Jagan Dental Centre, violate the Hippocratic Oath in which they swear to treat anyone in need without prejudice? Why does the Ministry of Health have a dress code when its toilet looks like a scene from Outbreak the movie? Has the First Lady really been advocating behind the scenes for the abolition of these codes or will we find a dress code in force at her own office? All these questions and more will be answered as Real Guyana presents a full feature on the dress code. Join me and a small band of demonstrators as we commit to a protest that takes us round some of the most notable enforcers of the dress code. Listen to the perspectives for and against the dress code as we engage members of the public in debate. We raise the related issue of quality public service and praise The Lands & Surveys Commission and Guyana Revenue Authority for leading the charge in abolishing their own dress code. Despite official pronouncement, the dress code still stands. It is not only clear that the dress code embraces sexist and elitist ideals on "modesty" and just how covered you must be to be considered worthy of public service in an equatorial climate but also needs one final push over the cliff. It is time for the signs to come down. Please feel free to add your voice to the debate and hit subscribe to stay in the loop. Over to you...
