In fact, it was Webster’s “Word of the Year” for 2022. Webster defines it as: [The] psychological manipulation of a person usually over an extended period of time that causes the victim to question the validity of their own thoughts, perception of reality, or memories and typically leads to confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem, uncertainty of one's emotional or mental stability, and a dependency on the perpetrator. In essence, gaslighting is crazy-making! Skilled gaslighters are exceptional in twisting and contorting reality to make it appear as if you, the sane one, are actually the crazy one. And, in the world of betrayal trauma recovery, which is the population I primarily work with as mental health professional, gaslighting is usually an effort to keep secrets secret. In other words, I can make you think you’re the crazy one, then I can keep the circus of lies and deception going, which only adds to the trauma of infidelity or other types of betrayal. In this four-part series, I am going to present the concept of gaslighting, as well as the 12 types of gaslighting, in a way that you likely have not heard before - a concept I refer to as "vulnerability exploitation."
