Roman Catholics read the Old Testament to find types of Mary in much the same way the Reformed theologians read the Old Testament to identify types of Christ. Much of their doctrine of Mary is derived from Old Testament typology, which makes many Protestants leery of finding any typological connections between Mary and Old Testament figures. But there are several legitimate connections that enrich our theology and understanding of the birth of our Lord.
