Regent College (Vancouver, BC)'s video: DID PAUL REALLY INTEND TO SILENCE WOMEN EVERYWHERE AND ALWAYS FIVE 16TH-CENTURY WOMEN SAID NO

@DID PAUL REALLY INTEND TO SILENCE WOMEN EVERYWHERE AND ALWAYS? FIVE 16TH-CENTURY WOMEN SAID "NO"
You’re invited to Regent's 2023 Evening Public Lecture series! Join us in the chapel or tune in online to explore theology, culture, and much more with this year’s summer faculty. ABOUT THE LECTURE Have you ever wondered how our foremothers of faith responded to controversial statements about women in Pauline literature? This lecture will introduce long-forgotten women who commented on Paul’s writings. Some felt compelled to preach in public or in writing and addressed the issue of women's silence head-on. Others countered simplistic readings of 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 and 1 Timothy 2:11–12 with a surprising array of biblical texts, as well as scriptural and historical examples of women speaking, confessing, witnessing, and even preaching. Join Old Testament scholar Dr. Marion Taylor and get to know five fascinating women: Lutheran pamphleteer Argula von Grumbach (1492–c.1563); Reformed church mother Katharina Schütz Zell (1497–1562); Catholic Abbess Caritas Pirckheimer (1467–1532), Reformed preacher, evangelist, and author Marie Dentière (1495–1561), and reform-minded Catholic Queen Marguerite de Navarre (1492–1549). ABOUT THE SPEAKER Dr. Marion Taylor is Professor of Old Testament at Wycliffe College at the University of Toronto. Her research interests include the reclamation of interpretive work by women throughout history. She is the author of Handbook of Women Biblical Interpreters: A Historical and Biographical Guide (Baker, 2012) and co-author of Voices Long Silenced: Women Biblical Interpreters through the Centuries (WJK, 2022). Dr. Taylor is teaching Silent No More: Women Interpreters of the Bible from May 15 to 19 as part of Regent’s 2023 Summer Programs.
