@Singing Lessons: Build Your Confidence With These 2 Concepts
Hello! Thank you for being here... today we are building a foundation for laaaaaaasting confidence... There are a lot of methods out there to build confidence… changing how you stand, shifting how you breathe, creating a mantra, visualization… I could make a long list… I think I have tried them all :)... but even with that long list you would need to find what works best for you. So boiled down, here are two things to consider if you lack confidence in your singing… First of all it’s normal… Singing is vulnerable. There is a nakedness to sharing our voice that is unlike other instruments. I have studied and played both the piano and the violin...the voice, for me, is by far a more vulnerable instrument. The voice can not only be influenced by all the things I am feeling emotionally… it can be influenced by physical shifts… allergies, illness, tiredness… and it can be influenced by the environment… too dry, high elevation, dusty and musty stages etc… not to mention… that muscles that aren’t even required for singing love to nominate themselves to help out in singing process and end up complicating things and getting in the way. It’s no wonder our confidence wanes. Soooo... when you are called to sing, you must accept that you are stepping into a world in which you ebb and flow with your instrument on a daily basis. It is both the beauty and the challenge of being a singer. All your fears will flair up. Singing will lead you to face things in yourself that you would rather avoid. The voice is an incredible teacher. Too much pushing your voice, it will let you know. Not enough engagement in your voice, it will let you know. Because of this, so many singers crave consistency, me included. We just want to show up to the gig knowing that all will go the same as, or fingers crossed, better than the rehearsal…, "If those high notes could be there every night, I would feel confident." "If my pitches were right on, I would feel confident." "If my voice was strong as I start each song, I would feel confident" Lots of "if’s"… But consistency for high notes, low notes, transitioning in the voice from low to high, telling the story, connecting with your audience…I feel is really less about dialing in the specific formula for what ever is causing the fear… and it is more about building a better relationship with your voice as a whole so you can be present while performing. Yes, present. In the moment. In the flow. In your creativity. working the song… taking risks…feeling the room. Like an athlete you are in the zone. For those of you that have felt this… this is why we love performing. How do we get there? One aspect is the competency and confidence loop… As your competency increases your confidence increases… that makes sense, right? The more you learn about your instrument… the more you understand how it works for you. You are able to take the mystery out of why your voice may be cracking on a particular note or word. You know what exercises to do to help condition your voice to meet your goals. You uncover and shift bad habits that you had no idea were getting in your way.
