Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2 brings to mind breathtaking landscapes in this concert that celebrates the beauty of the outdoors with multi-media images to transport the listener to fresh nature spaces and firs beneath a midnight sun. Complemented with Jessie Montgomery’s “Banner,” a rhapsody on the theme of the Star-Spangled Banner. The MSO’s opening concert is a tribute to our country, the beauty it holds, the struggles we have overcome and those still to be conquered. Featured Works: Sibelius’ “Symphony No. 2“ Jessie Montgomery’s “Banner“ About ’ Symphony No. 2: The Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43, by Jean Sibelius was started in winter 1901 in Rapallo, Italy, shortly after the successful premiere of the popular Finlandia, and finished in 1902 in Finland. Sibelius said, “My second symphony is a confession of the soul.” Sibelius scored his second symphony for an orchestra consisting of standard instruments. 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, tuba, timpani, and strings.
