Similes compare one thing to another, for example: “his face was red like a tomato”. Metaphors describe one thing as if it were another like: “Her eyes are shining diamonds.” Imagery is when words are used to build a picture in the reader’s mind. Imagery is often made up of similes and metaphors. A symbol is something that stands for an emotion or an idea. Take the sentence “Mary had loved that doll as a child”; the ‘doll’ could be a symbol for Mary’s childhood. Emotive language is used to make you feel a certain way, like happy or sad. Personification is when something in nature is given human characteristics, like “the tree branches danced in the wind.” Sometimes authors use ambiguity, which means words or events can have more than one meaning. You should try to find examples of this in your exam, which will get you more marks. Irony is used by some authors to say one thing, but mean something else. Say if Karl was bad at maths, the author could ironically write “Karl was amazing at Maths.” Comparing In your exam, it’s likely you’ll have to look at two or more texts and describe their similarities and differences. This would mean you’d have to look at the language they use, the ideas they contain and how each text is presented. Write about both texts together in each paragraph, and make links between them.
