“Stevie Montgomery” is my sphinx of a cat. She loves to protect and defend her home whatever the costs. She can be vicious - she fights most nights and is thankfully never injured - but she can be remarkably affectionate and warm when the mood suits her. Stevie is an old lady now. She loves to lounge and relax, stretching out her body and enjoying the undivided attention I give her. She sleeps most of the day and is active at night when she’s on her usual rounds. In my garden, though, she is most at peace and totally at home. I try not to disturb her when I see her there. Sometimes I can’t help but offer a friendly hello and a quick, reassuring pat on the head. She trills back at me in loving approval. Stevie doesn’t like to hunt and is instead focused on policing the perimeter of my property. Her territory includes my home and parts of my neighbors’ homes. She is nuts. Occasionally, I’ll find a mummified bluejay or a headless mouse in the courtyard, but on the whole, Stevie doesn’t have the time or energy to hunt and kill for sport. She would rather rest and relax during the day and be a steely cat at night.
