The opening is the most important part of any speech. Yes, even more important than the conclusion. Now I know that the conclusion is the last thing that the audience hears and therefore the thing that they are most likely to remember, so it is very important. But by the time that you reach the end of your speech, you are reminding them of the journey that they have just been on. What you have to do in the opening is sell the audience on taking the journey with you in the first place. Have you ever left a meeting and discovered that you can't recall much that the speaker said? It has certainly happened to me. The speaker has been promoted in the marketing material and this is part of what has attracted the audience to be there; hopefully a good hook offering you the solution to a problem that you face or insights into an area that you are interested in. So today we are going to look at how you can create an opening that will inspire your audience to want to listen to what you have to say.
