Sungai Ciliwung dahulu pernah terkenal karena kejernihan airnya. Bahkan karena kualitas air sungai ini pula, kota Jakarta yang dulu bernama Batavia sempat dijuluki "Queen of the East". Kualitas air ciliwung kini tak ubahnya air selokan yang tak layak pakai, bahkan untuk tepat berhabitat hewan pun.
