Ripe's video: interviewing Activists Students at the Global Climate Strike in NYC

@interviewing Activists & Students at the Global Climate Strike in NYC
On Friday, September 20th, Swedish activist Greta Thunburg, 16, will lead the world in a demonstration for climate justice outside of the United Nations in New York City. The Global Climate Strike is scheduled three days before world leaders are to convene at the UN for the Climate Action Summit, where they are expected to escalate their goals from the 2015 Paris Accords. In Paris, countries agreed to set their own modest goals to cumulatively bring global temperatures below 2˚C above pre-industrial levels. Strikers are hoping to encourage UN delegates to set even more aggressive goals. A recent report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change stated that a 2˚C limit is not stringent enough and that its suggested cap of 1.5˚C will result in fewer extreme weather events, lower rates of poverty and make natural ecosystems more liveable than the original goal. The global temperature in 2017 was roughly 1˚ above pre-industrial levels and IPCC projects it to increase by .2˚ each decade unless dramatic action is taken soon. Apart from encouraging political leaders to take action, reducing or eliminating reliance on animal products is shown to be one of the most effective ways to lower global temperatures. The meat and dairy industries take up roughly 33% of global arable land for feeding and housing livestock, resulting in deforestation in addition to the emission of greenhouse gases while raising, producing and transporting animal products. Over 150 countries will be participating in the Global Climate Strike this Friday with over 2,500 events scheduled worldwide. Find your local Strike here. On Friday's Global Climate Strike NYC at Battery Park activists spoke out against animal agriculture, big oil and gas, and Trump's administration. In addition to climate activist and youth leader Greta Thunberg keynote speech, plus surprise Jaden Smith performance.
