Ripe's video: World s Largest Pork Producer is Launching New Vegan Meat Products

Smithfield Foods, Inc., a meat-producing $15 billion global food company and the largest pork producer in the world, announced Aug. 13 that it will launch a new line of plant-based products under the company’s new Pure Farmland brand. The decision comes after years of scrutiny from multiple organizations regarding the treatment of the 32,000 pigs the company kills each day. The line includes eight products, including breakfast patties, meatballs, burger patties, and protein starters packaged in 50 percent recycled materials. The targeted consumers are “flexitarians,” people who are looking to decrease the meat in their diets. “With this launch, we are bringing together our expertise in creating market-leading food products, our organizational commitment to sustainability, and our deep understanding of ‘flexitarian’ consumers, to deliver a broad variety of flavorful plant-based protein choices that consumers want and can afford at a great value,” said Smithfield Foods Chief Commercial Officer John Pauley. According to Pauley, the company has been looking to enter the plant-based market for some time, and have taken their time to get it right. The plant-based line is set to be available across the US in mid-September, and they will be stored in supermarkets within the refrigerated sections. The company has partnered with the American Farmland Trust to donate the cost of protecting one square foot of farmland per package sold.
