There’s no denying how popular the vegan diet and lifestyle has gotten over the past couple of years, but to really understand the effect vegan products have had on the market, it’s worth it to take a look at the stats.... Advocacy group Good Food Institute (GFI) and trade group Plant Based Food Association (PBFA) have recently released joint data detailing this information. Possibly the biggest news from the data is that the vegan food industry is now worth $4.5 billion. This comes after an 11% increase in plant-based foods over the past year, while the retail food market only increased by 2%. Broken down into specific categories, sale of plant-based milk has increased by 6 percent over the past year and now makes up about 13% of the milk category. In contrast, cow milk sales have gone down by 3% in the same period. Plant-based meat sales have gone up by 10 percent this past year, while sales of animal meat grew by 2 percent. Not only this, but the plant-based meat industry is currently worth $800 million! Sales of vegan yogurt, cheese and ice cream has also surged: 39 percent, 19 percent and 27 percent, respectively. Traditional dairy product sales have either remained the same or decreased. Caroline Bushnell, director of Corporate Engagement, told Veg News that "this is just the beginning of a massive growth period for plant-based foods. This growth will continue as more companies bring next-generation innovations to market that really deliver on the most important driver of consumer choice: taste."
