Ripe's video: NY Bill Passed Requiring All Public Hospitals to Serve Plant Based Meals

A Plant based diet in today's world is more common than ever before. As this lifestyle continues to grow, access to it should be as well. The New York State Assembly has just passed a landmark bill ensuring that hospital patients have access to a plant based option in all meals being served. The New York State Assembly member Richard N. Gottfried, and Senator Brad Holyman brought Bill S1471 forward, addressing the importance of this bill to be passed. Not only is this essential for patients who follow a plant based diet, but Susan Levin, the director of Nutrition stresses the fact that this lifestyle is a healthy choice for patients and “will help fight heart disease, diabetes and obesity” Providing plant based options could also positively affect the financial aspects of the hospitals. Having plant based options in Hospital not only benefits the patients' overall health, but it benefits the financials of the Hospital. California has recently passed similar legislation- they have found that “vegetarian entrees cost about 50 percent less than meat entrees”.
